Colorado teachers union leader reportedly rallied against charter school: ‘A further decrease in enrollment’

(Fox News)

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

The leader of a Colorado teachers union reportedly emailed staff encouraging them to provide their “thoughts” on whether the town should have another charter school, saying that it would mean less funding for their district.

“Please note that if Ascent gets approved, it is anticipated to cause a further decrease in enrollment across our district. For those of you who don’t know, less students = less $$. Please think about signing up to speak at the forum and providing your thoughts on whether we need another charter in our small town,” the email, reportedly written by a Colorado teachers union leader and posted to Twitter by Corey DeAngelis, national director of research for the American Federation for Children, said.

The decision on the potential opening of Ascent Classical Academy, a K-12 charter school in the Durango district will come on June 13, according to the Durango public schools’ website.

The Durango School District 9-R Board of Education issued a statement on the charter school’s application in March after Ascent had asked for an earlier application date, which Durango did not approve.

Derec Shuler, executive director of Ascent Classical Academies, has argued that the district should accept the early application, according to the Durango Herald. He said that the school needs enough time to acquire land and search for staff.

“To protect its constitutional right to local control and its lawful interest in an equitable and workable charter review process that is applied consistently to all potential charter schools, the District has asked the District Court for La Plata County to declare that the District is not required to review Ascent Classical’s charter application until August 1, 2022,” Kristin Smith, school board president, said in the March statement.

The school board decided to move forward on a review of their application following a meeting on May 19, according to the website.

SCHOOL CLOSURES MAKE THE CASE FOR SCHOOL CHOICE

“It’s a tight timeline, but we are taking the time to set up extra public meetings,” Smith said on May 23. “We know that it’s important for community members to know what’s happening and have an opportunity to provide feedback. As a board, we agree that it’s integral for the public to have a voice.”

“The ‘less students = less $$’ email inadvertently makes the case for school choice in at least two ways: the teachers union leader said the quiet part out loud – that they see kids merely as funding units – and they didn’t even get the grammar

Nazem Kadri’s Electric Game 2 Draws Rave Reviews as Avalanche Down Oilers

(Bleacher Report)

Justin Edmonds/Getty Images

The Colorado Avalanche have taken a 2-0 Western Conference Finals series lead over the Edmonton Oilers after Nadem Kadri powered the Avs to a 4-0 home win on Thursday.

A scoreless second-period tie turned into a 3-0 Avalanche lead in 2: 04 thanks largely to Kadri, who had three primary assists and now has six goals and eight helpers in 12 playoff games.

Kadri initially received credit for the first goal, but that one eventually went to Artturi Lehkonen, who deflected it in.

Kadri did excellent work on the third by feeding Rantanen on a two-on-one for the insurance goal, which occurred six minutes into the second period.

That was more than enough for the Avalanche, who shut down the Oilers thanks in part to goaltender Pavel Francouz’s 24 saves. Nathan MacKinnon also added a late power-play goal for the 4-0 win.

Kadri was this game’s superstar, though, and Twitter gave him due credit for his performance.

PEAK: Ben Nighthorse Campbell endorses O’Dea to win back the seat he once held for the GOP

(Colorado Peak Politics)

Republican U.S. Senate candidate Joe O’Dea has received the endorsement of the man who once held that seat for the GOP.

Former U.S. Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell said this week the self-made businessman has what it takes to unite voters and win back that seat from the Democrats, whom we can all agree has made a real mess of things.

“Joe’s story is a Colorado story,” Campbell said in a statement released by the O’Dea campaign. “His character has helped him forge one of our state’s most successful construction firms, raise a beautiful family, and come November, reclaim my Senate seat for working families. We need a senator who is focused on ensuring that our government works for the people, not against them. Joe will be that senator.”

Campbell had the foresight to split from the Democratic party in 1995 to become a Republican, noting then the party was no longer about working Americans.

“Joe O’Dea has the ability to bring together Republicans, independents, and even disaffected Democrats who are fed up with their party’s failure to address the issues that matter. I encourage all to join me in supporting Joe’s campaign.”

O’Dea is running against state Rep. Ron Hanks in the June 28 Republican primary.

HERALD: Boulder, Lafayette, Superior & Louisville set to crush the Second Amendment June 7th

(The Colorado Herald)

Boulder, in its ever woke quest to appease the left, has always been a “leader” in the Dems’ crusade to literally scrap the Second Amendment in the name of “safety.” Boulder has used shootings several times over the years to trample on its residents’ core Constitutional rights, and the municipality isn’t stopping anytime soon. In fact, Louisville, Superior, and Lafayette have joined Boulder in aiming to kill the Second Amendment.

In 2018, Boulder enacted a ban on assault-style weapons as well as high capacity magazines. The justification for infringing on residents’ core Constitutional rights was the left’s feelings as usual. Common sense has proven over the last two decades after the Columbine school shooting that law-abiding citizens are not the people who perpetrate mass shootings. Unconstitutional laws, no matter how hard the left tries, do nothing to stop criminal terrorists and the mentally ill from mass shootings.

In fact, a judge struck down Boulder’s 2018 unconstitutional ban as just that in the Spring of 2021. Sadly, though, a mass shooting by a Muslim terrorist at Boulder’s King Soopers and a Dem-controlled legislature brought back the ban in the winter of 2022. The left never misses a good tragedy to steal guns from law-abiding Americans.

In June of 2021, the Dem-controlled, anti-gun Colorado legislature passed SB21-256, Local Regulation of Firearms, which gives local jurisdictions, including special districts, the right to ignore the Constitution and further restrict the rights of law-abiding citizens.

PEAK: Gazette endorses GOP Reichert for 7th, Kirkmeyer for 8th District congressional seats

(Colorado Peak Politics)

In Colorado’s two congressional seats up for grabs this year, the conservative editorial board of The Gazette has endorsed economist Tim Reichert for the 7th Congressional District, and state Sen. Barb Kirkmeyer for the 8th District Republican primary elections.

The 8th District is Colorado’s new congressional seat created after the 2020 Census.

It’s considered one of the hottest contested races in the nation, as Republicans fight to win control of the House and Senate and bring some balance to the progressive-dominated Biden administration.

The Gazette says Kirkmeyer is the ideal choice to land this district for the Republican Party because she checks all the right boxes on issues near and dear to conservative hearts in supporting 2nd Amendment rights, law and order, pro life and a fiscal conservative.

Where Kirkmeyer distinguishes herself is her seasoning in actually putting those principles to work. Currently a member of the state Senate, Kirkmeyer served previously as a Weld County Commissioner for two decades. She served, as well, in the cabinet of Republican former Gov. Bill Owens. In other words, she knows her way around government and public policy.

But she also is rooted firmly in private enterprise. A fourth-generation Coloradan from Brighton and CU grad who co-owned and operated a dairy farm, she understands the challenges facing small business as a longtime small-business owner herself.

In the 7th District being vacated by Democrat U.S. Rep. Ed Perlmutter, The Gazette says Reichert is the smart choice for Republicans to win that seat.

Avalanche Praised for Explosive Offensive Outburst in Wild Game 1 Win vs. Oilers

(Bleacher Report)

Justin Edmonds/Getty Images

In the time it takes you to read this sentence, the Colorado Avalanche and Edmonton Oilers may have scored two more goals.

Tuesday’s Game 1 of the Western Conference Final was a track meet on ice that Colorado won 8-6. The Avalanche’s attack overwhelmed Edmonton’s defense from the start, and they are now three wins away from their first Stanley Cup Final since 2001.

A high-scoring game wasn’t exactly surprising with the star power in a series featuring Connor McDavid and Nathan MacKinnon, but few probably envisioned five combined goals in the first period and six combined goals in the second period.

Social media could barely keep up with the pace:

Oilers and Avs goalies tonight 🤣 @BR_OpenIce pic.twitter.com/OyhMOQpgns

In a contest where seemingly everyone stuffed the stat sheet, J.T. Compher (two goals) and Cale Makar (one goal and two assists) stood out for Colorado, while McDavid (one goal and two assists) did for Edmonton.

The first period saw Evander Kane open the scoring just for Compher to answer in a mere 36 seconds. That was far longer than Makar needed when he responded to Zach Hyman’s goal with one of his own just nine seconds later. The Makar goal was somewhat controversial because of an offside review, but it stood.

Intermission didn’t cool down the respective offenses, as goals from Nazem Kadri, Ryan McLeod, Mikko Rantanen and Compher in the first seven minutes of the second period made it 6-3.

The second period also marked the end of the day for both goaltenders with Edmonton pulling Mike Smith for Mikko Koskinen and Colorado inserting Pavel Francouz because Darcy Kuemper suffered an upper-body injury. McDavid managed a goal against the backup, but the Avalanche still led 7-4 heading to the third.

Nothing about Tuesday’s game was straightforward, though, so it followed that Derek Ryan and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored to make it 7-6 and put all the pressure on Colorado’s side in the closing stretch.

However, Gabriel Landeskog’s empty-netter ended the tension for the victors, who will look to defend home ice once again in Thursday’s Game 2.

PAGE TWO: High court okays measure aimed at monopoly utilities; share of profits would ease ratepayer burden

(Complete Colorado Page Two)

DENVER — The Colorado Supreme Court has cleared the way for a for a citizen’s initiative that would require monopoly energy providers to set aside a percentage of their profits for new expenses.

Under Initiative 93, investor-owned utilities, such as Xcel Energy and Atmos Energy would be required to pay a minimum of 5 percent of their annual profits toward utility rate hikes, to help offset the rising cost of energy to captive customers.

The official language of the initiative, which was brought by Independence Institute* President Jon Caldara along with Jake Fogleman, an energy policy analyst at the Institute, says:

“It shall be the public policy of the State of Colorado that investor-owned utilities providing electric or gas service or both to residential, commercial or industrial users in Colorado shall bear their fair share of all utility rates set by the public utilities commission.”

The new statute would not apply to cooperative energy providers.

However, Xcel Energy challenged the ruling to the Colorado Supreme Court, saying there were multiple issues with the initiative.

First, they argued the measure contained more than one subject in violation of Colorado’s single subject law. They also argued that the measure was confusing to the public, saying the only reasonable conclusion was that the measure would result in the 5 percent being paid back to themselves.

However, they would not be paying themselves back.

PEAK: Smirk: Denver Post denied press passes to cover Western Conservative Summit

(Colorado Peak Politics)

Denver Post reporters did such a lousy job of covering the Western Conservative Summit last year, organizers were not inclined to grant the paper credentials to attend and report on this week’s event.

Western Conservative Summit has decided, for first time in 13 years, to deny press credentials to the Denver Post. For a few reasons:
1. Inaccurate reporting – Last year they reported no protests of Andy Ngo. Here are Summit youth being protected by Denver Police from protestors. pic.twitter.com/G3J1PfP6eR

— Jeff Hunt (@jeffhunt) May 27, 2022

PeakNation™ will recall our reporting at the time that Post reporters must have tragically been struck blind.

How else to explain the paper’s blatantly erroneous  reporting that “no protesters were spotted inside or outside Saturday,” while our Twitter feed was full of photos of protestors, which we shared with readers in our report.

We checked the story again on Wednesday to see if the Post ever made a correction to last year’s story, and to their shame, they have not.

As KOA’s Mandy Connell observed, the Post can still buy tickets to attend the event.

However, it will do them good to try covering the Summit from outside the building, alongside all those invisible protestors.

PEAK: Colorado is only three seats away from sanity being restored to state government

(Colorado Peak Politics)

If Colorado Democrats lose just three seats in the state Senate this election year, it will create a seismic shift in the total control the party now holds over the entire state government.

Just three seats, that’s all it will take to stop the progressive rule that has been crippling our economy and imposing idiotic government controls over our everyday lives.

Our government was not designed to sustain such absolute power, but to ensure representation of all people.

As Tom Cronin and Bob Loevy write in Colorado Politics:

Both houses of the state legislature controlled by one political party is not what the Founders of our constitutional democracy had in mind. Their writings indicate they hoped the state legislatures, particularly the state houses of representatives, would become the home of the popular views of the average citizenry. Sadly, because of gerrymandering of state legislative district lines, our state legislatures are now resistant to the popular will and remain firmly in the grip of their dominant political parties.

Colorado is one of only seven states facing a chamber shift of power this election that would split control between the parties — and Lord knows we are in dire need of some checks and balance on what is coming out of the governor’s mansion in Boulder and the Capitol in Denver.

Just three seats. So go vote. Ballots hit mailboxes next week.
